Sancia Duncan

I have a Masters in Counselling and am a registered member of the New Zealand Christian Counsellors Association. In sessions with clients I use a pluralistic approach that is client centred and based on the needs of the individual. I believe that each individual has within them the resources needed to make change. I see it as a privilege to support and journey alongside people offering hope as they grapple with the challenges in life. You can expect to feel valued, respected and heard in sessions with me without judgement. I work with ACC sensitive claim clients, families that are with the Child Cancer Foundation and clients who are grappling with the many forms of loss, grief and trauma that living in this world can bring. I also have experience working with adults and youth from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.

What a privilege it is to be able to join the team at Loss and Grief Centre Kapiti to be able to support those in need through difficult times.
A little bit about me. I grew up in South Africa and immigrated to New Zealand 10 years ago. I have a background in education, but my calling and passion has always been to work with those most in need of support and understanding. I am a newly graduated counsellor in training with a heart to help.
I believe that no matter what situations come our way, we all have an inner strength to carry us through those situations. My aim is to support the clients I work with to realise and find their inner strength to heal through difficulty and live a meaningful life with confidence. My work is based upon Christian values that strive to build up and empower my clients in a non-judgmental and meaningful way. I will endeavour to listen, hear and understand you in a safe, caring and loving environment with the knowledge that you are the expert of your life. I also believe that we need to treat our healing holistically and have all areas of ourselves in alignment for optimal living.
As a wife, mother and daughter, I know the many hats we wear to care for others yet we at times forget to care for ourselves. Making the decision to start a counselling journey takes courage and signifies motivation for self-care and support. Well done for initiating that step on your healing journey and welcome to a journey of healing, self-discovery, and support.
God Bless

Ko wai ahau? (Who am I?)
I was born in England and emigrated to Aotearoa, New Zealand as a child. I grew up in Porirua, and am now married with three adult children, two of whom have moved out of home.
I am a trainee counsellor, slowly completing a Bachelor of Counselling part-time through Bethlehem Tertiary Institute (Tauranga) by distance.  It has been my privilege to join the team at Kapiti Loss and Grief over the last two years for my 3rd and 4th student placements.
Knowing personally, the value of support through counselling conversations to make sense of, find a way through and restore identity in relation to who or what has been lost, my hope is to provide that support to others who consult with me about their experiences.
